Aleyamma M. Thomas

Aleyamma Mannil Thomas, affectionately known as "Kunjamma," peacefully passed away on March 14, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 7, 1937, in Puliyoor, Kerala, India, she was the fourth of seven children born to the late P.I. Varghese and Mariamma Varghese. Kunjamma pursued her nursing education at Patna Nursing College in Bihar, India, where she began her dedicated career of service and care. It was during this time that she met her beloved husband, M.K. Thomas (Thankachan), who was working in the same town. After completing her studies, Kunjamma moved to New Delhi to work at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). She married Thankachan on November 4, 1963, in New Delhi. Thankachan preceded her in death in June 2023. In October 1972, Kunjamma bravely emigrated to the United States, laying the foundation for her family's future. Her husband and their three young children, Matthew, Varghese, and Beena, soon followed. Initially settling in New York City, they were instrumental in establishing the original St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, where they passionately served the community and supported numerous relatives in their immigration journeys. In 1979, the family relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey, making it their home for over 45 years. Here, they continued their spiritual mission as founding members of St. Peter's Mar Thoma Church, deeply engaging with the community through various ministries and outreach programs. Kunjamma was also deeply supportive of her husband Thankachan's active participation not only in Mar Thoma Church activities but also in various social and cultural organizations throughout North Jersey, including BCMC and the Kerala Cultural Society. Kunjamma continued her career at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Despite challenging commutes and demanding night shifts, she always prioritized family, cooking meals, overseeing homework, and nurturing her loved ones. Due to kidney failure, Kunjamma had to retire from nursing in the early 2000s, yet through her steadfast faith and God's grace, she received a successful kidney transplant in 2003, further deepening her trust in divine providence. Kunjamma’s unwavering faith was evident in every aspect of her life. She devotedly participated in church activities, including Sevika Sanghom, Bible studies, quizzes, and scripture readings during services. Her generous spirit was a profound testament to her faith, continuously supporting her family, friends, and missions, always offering aid and comfort to those in need, accompanied by her reassuring smile and uplifting words. She enjoyed extending financial support to various social and charitable organizations and to individuals in need, often going beyond their capacity. Kunjamma found immense joy in spending time with family, especially her granddaughter Lauren, imparting wisdom and faith-filled life lessons. She loved doing crossword puzzles, cooking and gardening. Her vibrant garden bloomed beautifully with hydrangeas, roses, magnolia trees and various cherished plants. Kunjamma's profound faith, generosity, and nurturing heart deeply touched everyone around her. She leaves behind her beloved children, Matthew; Varghese and his wife Diane, along with their daughter, Lauren; Beena and her husband Pinto; extended family; and numerous friends, all inspired by her enduring legacy of love and faith.
