Cynthia Mitchell

Cynthia Mitchell (née Prince), a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished member of our family, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025. Born on September 20, 1932, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Cynthia lived a life marked by resilience, faith, and an unwavering dedication to her family and community. She immigrated to America in 1972 to build a better life for her family. She worked as a private au pair for many years and later worked in the Housekeeping Department at Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood, NJ. At the age of 50, Cynthia made the bold decision to return to school, earning her certification as a Nurse’s Aide. She provided compassionate care to countless patients at Pascack Valley, where she retired at the age of 70. In retirement, her life’s passion was being a full-time grandmother and great-grandmother. Cynthia’s faith was central to her life. A devoted parishioner of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Teaneck, NJ, she prayed daily for her family, friends and the world. Her deep spirituality guided her actions and shaped the kindness and generosity for which she was known. She found joy in reading her Bible and spiritual books and also had a great love for music. Cynthia had a passion for plants and gardening. A hobby she developed from her mother, Ivy, while growing up in Trinidad. Her condo in Hackensack was adorned with different types of greenery and she was always willing to share advice on how to best take care of them. Those who knew her will remember her as spunky and full of life, often asking “are you behaving yourself?” She was always ready for a conversation, quick with a laugh, and deeply loving and uplifting towards those around her. Cynthia is survived by her children: Patricia David, Hollis Prince, and Juliana Mitchell; her grandchildren: Christopher David, Marvin David, Anansa Prince, and Jaslyn Mitchell-Drake; and her great-grandchildren: Justin David, Jayden David, and Ariel David; nephews Curtis Sunley, Shurland Sundley, great-nephew Marlon Sunley, great niece Shauniele Sunley; extended family Michelle and Irving Reyes and their sons Ryan and Nikko Reyes, dear friend Joan Eliston as well as other family, friends and parishioners at St. Mark’s. She was predeceased by her mother Ivy Pilgrim; sister Sybil McDowell; and brothers Lenox Sunley and Linton Sunley. Cynthia’s warmth and spirit touched many lives. While we mourn the loss of Cynthia’s physical presence, we take comfort in knowing that her spirit will live on in the memory of the countless lives she touched during her time with us and bring comfort to the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Rest peacefully, dear Cynthia, and may your spirit continue to guide us all in the days ahead. A viewing will be held on February 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM followed by a memorial service at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, located at 118 Chadwick Road in Teaneck, New Jersey. A private cremation will be held by the family.
