Joan P Oddie

Joan Patricia Oddie 86, of Teaneck passed away Thursday April 12, 2018 at CareOne Health Care facility in Oradell, NJ. Visitation is at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Road, Teaneck on Tuesday April 17th, from 6 to 8 pm and Wednesday April 18th, from 11am to 12:30pm. Joan was born in Brooklyn NY and spent her childhood in Teaneck and is a graduate of Teaneck High School. In 1954 she married her first husband Edward P. Mathieson and moved to Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, where they raised their only child Edward Mathieson Jr. until Edward Sr’s death in 1980. After marrying her current husband William John Oddie in 1988, Joan moved back to Teaneck where she spent the balance of her life until being admitted to CareOne just a few weeks ago. Joan spent her over 30-year career at what is now Hackensack University Medical Center. She began as a typist and over the course of her career advanced to the position of Assistant Vice President of Patient Care. In her retirement with her husband William, Joan opened and ran an antique and knick-knack shop, The Mixed Bag, in Hackensack. She was also an active member of and served as Secretary for the Teaneck Senior Citizens Advisory Board, traveled with her husband and spent time with her family and friends. Joan is survived by her husband William John Oddie, her son Edward P. Mathieson Jr. his wife Veronica and their son Edward P. Mathieson III of Belleville, NJ , step children Sarah A. Byrne and her husband Simon and their children Molly and Peggy of Giggleswick UK, David W. Oddie and his wife Jayne and their children Alex, Lucy, and Tom of Wakefield UK, Mary-Jane Godfrey and her husband John and their children Oliver, Cara, Barnaby and Lulu of London UK, Lucy K. Barnett and her husband Mike and their children Maisie and Martha of Harrogate UK, Sister in law Maria Balle of Pheonixville, PA and nephew Christopher Balle and wife Terri and their children Christopher, Laura and Rachel of Vienna, VA. Joan is predeceased by her brother John William Balle, her sister Katherine Balle and her grandson William Oddie. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org
