John P. Lyons

John P. Lyons passed away on Sunday November 18, 2018 at the age of 80. Born in the Bronx, he was a resident of Oradell for 46 years, previously living in Dumont. John, Johnny, JP, Jack, “JR”, Uncle John, and finally, Papa, was a graduate of Fordham University, where he was President of the Student Body and he also served in the United States National Guard in the mid-1960s. A CPA with an extraordinary mind for numbers, he was notably the Comptroller of Midlantic National Bank before retiring in the mid-90s and he devoted countless hours to local philanthropic activities. His deepest passions were his family, his beloved Lyons Family Reunion — of which he attended all 41 reunions to date, the Sunday Jumble which he played religiously with his children and grandchildren, and tennis which he excelled at for more than 50 years. John is survived by the woman he adored most of all, his wife of 58 years, Elaine (nee Cronin), his four cherished children and nine grandchildren; Michael Lyons; Suzanne Lyons and her two daughters Grace and Charlotte; Tricia Lyons, her husband David Link and their four children Riley, Devon, Christopher and Kyle; and Jennifer Pfohl, her husband Steven and their three daughters Kaleigh, Sarah and Meghan. He is also survived by his brother Donald Lyons and his wife Catherine, his sister Gladys Sheehan, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews who all adored their Uncle John. He was predeceased by his parents James and Mary, his brother Jim Lyons and his wife Sally, his sister Marita Walker and her husband Bob, and his brother-in-law Neil Sheehan. A Memorial Visitation will be held this Wednesday, November 21, 2018 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell, NJ. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 1st at 12:30pm at St. Joseph RCC, 300 Elm Street, Oradell, NJ.
