Marjorie M. Matthews

Marjorie Matthews, Dedicated nurse and family matriarch Marjorie (Henry) M. Matthews, 92, of Englewood, NJ formerly of Monroe Township, NJ, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020 in Teaneck NJ. Marjorie was born in East Chicago Indiana to the late Edward Henry Sr. and Zula (McCarty) Henry. She was raised in Muskegon Michigan and attended Muskegon High School. After graduating from Muskegon High she moved to Harlem, NY where she met and wed her adoring husband Charles in 1952. Marjorie is a graduate of Harlem Hospital School of Nursing and worked for many years as an OR RN at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in NYC until it ceased serving as a hospital. Marjorie eventually returned to school graduating from Hunter College earning her Bachelor of Science Degree and finished her career at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital in NYC. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Charles “Uncle Charles” Matthews; son Charles Matthews Jr.; sisters, Vivian, Nelsie, Georgia and brothers Edward and Daniel. Marjorie is survived by her dedicated son Anthony Matthews; devoted daughter Melanie Matthews; cherished granddaughter Shay-Marie Colon; nieces, Marie Jones; Edna Cirone (George}; Carol West; Vickie Morris; great nieces Elise Jones; Felicia Lea; Jill West-Mcknight; Taliah West-Sims; great nephews Eric Jones (Jennifer); Michael Jones (Vivian); nephew Henry Jr. and a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews all of whom she loved immeasurably. Quiet, and known for her kind spirit, as a former nurse she was always concerned about the welfare of others. Despite her struggles with her health towards the end of her life, her caring ways were always clearly noticeable. Marjorie loved to read and write and you would often see her with a pen and pencil. She often used the phrase coined by Maya Angelou, “ Do the best you can until you know better, then when you know better do better”. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Volk Leber Funeral Home in Teaneck, NJ.
