Mary E. McCallum

Mary Elizabeth McCoy was born in Warsaw, Virginia on November 24, 1933 and departed this life on November 20, 2018. She was the third of four children born to the late James R. and Clara P. McCoy. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, cousin, aunt, great aunt and great- great aunt. Mary grew up in a loving family who believed in Jesus Christ as their Savior and the power of prayer. She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and became a member of Mulberry Baptist Church in Emmerton, Va. After graduating from the Richmond County School System, she attended Virginia State College and received her Bachelor’s degree. Mary relocated to New York City where she landed a job with the City of New York and worked as a dietitian with several hospitals; Morrisania, Bronx, NY, Jacobi, Bronx, NY and later Queens Hospital, Queens, NY. She retired in 1997 after 35 years of service. In 1957 she met the love of her life John McCallum, who she affectionately called “Johnny” who preceded her in death on February 12, 2018. In 1959 they married and to this union they had two sons. Mary never stop serving God. After leaving Virginia and moving to New York City, she joined Union Baptist Church, Harlem, NY and served as a Sunday School teacher. Upon moving to New Jersey and not being able to attend Union Baptist Church regularly, she started attending First Baptist Church, Englewood with her family. Mary never liked a lot of fanfare, she just went about her business and did what she had to do. She always tried to treat everyone fair and with the utmost respect. She definitely had a way of making you feel right at home. Mary loved traveling and spending time with her family and she was so proud of her sons; but especially her granddaughter, who was the pride and joy of her life. Mary leaves to cherish her memory her loving sons, John McCallum Jr., Michael McCallum, her daughter-in-law, Detria, who she always referred to as her daughter, her granddaughter Monica, sister-in-law Marie McCoy, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Friends and family are invited for visitation on Saturday, December 1st from 9-11AM at First Baptist Church of Englewood, 351 W. Englewood Avenue, Englewood, NJ. A funeral service will begin at 11AM. Interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ.
