Mattie Mae Compton

Compton, Mattie Mae, of Teaneck, NJ passed away and went on to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, after a valiant battle with illness, at Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River, NJ, surrounded by her family. She was a sprightly 85. Mattie was born in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia on September 14, 1930 to the late Minnie Mae Mays and late Sylvester Bryant. In 1948, she married Wilbert Compton. During their blessed union, they lived across several countries and countless states, as Wilbert served twenty-two years in the United States Army, and had four beautiful children. Over the span of her fulfilled lifetime, being the fiercely independent woman that she was, Mattie worked as a bus driver for elementary school-aged children and a technician at GTE in Massachusetts. Upon her retirement, Mattie assumed an active role in raising and nurturing her two youngest grandchildren. She was also an active member of her church, Christ Temple Church of Personal Experience of Boston, Massachusetts, and a member of the softball team at the United States Army base in Japan. Mattie leaves to passionately cherish her memory: a devout husband, Wilbert Compton of Teaneck, NJ; four faithful daughters: Verenda Powe, Nedra Compton-Wilcher (Victor), Audrey McGregor (Carlton) and Linda Compton; four adoring grandchildren: Sakeena Powe, John Dunning (Nora Haron), Matthew McGregor and Michael McGregor (Andre Albertini); three great-grandchildren: Princess Mikala Powe, Terrence Powe and Nile Dunning; two beloved dogs: Brixton and Brooklyn; nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was predeceased by her doting brothers, Reverend Raymond Mays, Sr. and Leonard McBride. Special Thanks to the staff at the Villa Marie Claire, Rhonda Mangan and Paula Moye for their boundless compassion. Additionally, a heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Holy Name Hospital Dialysis Center for their years of excellent and tender care. Anyone who ever met Mattie was able to experience her infectious smile and affable sense of humor. Although we will miss this and so much more about her, we are eternally grateful for these and so many more memories that we are able to treasure for posterity. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, January 12th, 2016 at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ, 07666, from 4pm—8pm. A funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 13th, 2016 at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 260 Central Avenue, Hackensack, NJ, 07601, at 9am. The interment will take place at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Provinceline Road, Wrightstown, NJ, 08562.
