Fr. Michael S. Sgarioto

(November 3, 2013; Darien, IL) The Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, (PCM) Order of Carmelites, mourns the death of the Reverend Michael Sgarioto, O.Carm., who died in his sleep at the age of 56 on November 2, 2013, at the priory of Saint Anastasia Parish in Teaneck, New Jersey. Visitation for Reverend Michael Sgarioto, O.Carm., will be held-in- state at Saint Anastasia Church, 1095 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, New Jersey, Monday, November 4, 2013 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. A funeral Mass will also be held at Saint Anastasia Church, Tuesday, November 5th at 10:00 AM. On Thursday, November 7th, visitation will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 8404 Cass Avenue, Darien, Illinois, from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetary, Chicago, IL. Michael was born to (the late) Samuel Angelo Sgarioto and Mary Ann (MacLellan) Sgarioto on July 29, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois. His given name at baptism was Michael Samuel. He is survived by his mother Mary Ann and his brother Carl Sgarioto. (Mary), Joanne Ducar (Philip), Donna Ducar (David), and Paula Burns (Danny), and 6 nieces and nephews. Michael attended Saint Mary of Mount Carmel Grade School and Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, Illinois. From 1975 to 1979, he then attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, earning a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He entered the Carmelite Order, professing first vows on June 15, 1981, at the Carmelite Novitiate in Middletown, New York. Michael studied theology at Washington Theological Union in Washington, DC, earning a master’s degree in divinity in 1985. He made his solemn profession with the Carmelites on October 27, 1984. He was ordained a Carmelite Priest on May 18, 1985, at Saint Clara Church in Chicago, Illinois. After his ordination, Father Michael’s first assignment was as parochial vicar at the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Lima, Peru, for three years. He then served at the parish of Santa Ana in Yauri, Peru, for another three years. In 1991 he returned to Chicago, Illinois, and served as Mission Awareness Program Director for one year. He then returned to Lima, Peru, to serve as pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish for the next six years. In 1998 Father Michael returned to the United States, and served as pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Houston, Texas, for two years. In 2000 Father Michael once more returned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Lima, as parochial vicar, also serving as president of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Lima. In 2002 he became pastor of Saint Agnes parish in Phoenix, Arizona, serving in that capacity until 2004. Father Michael returned to the same parish he had previously served in Lima for one last time, serving as pastor for the next eight years. In 2012 Father Michael took a sabbatical for four months, before becoming parochial vicar at Saint Anastasia parish in Teaneck, New Jersey, in January 2013. In July, 2013 he became the pastor at Saint Anastasia parish, a position he held until his untimely death. May he rest in peace.
