Dr. Pierre Antoine Marie C. Duthil

Dr. Duthil, affectionately called Marie Carmelle by her friends and family, was born January 5, 1955 in Thomazeau Haiti to Suzanne Despuzeau and Bellony Duthil. She is survived by her sisters, Marie Evelyne Duthil Vilaire, Anne Marie Duthil, Marie Andree Duthil Suffrard, and Yvrose Duthil Simeon, her brothers Renee Bellony Duthil and Beauvoir Duthil, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and various extended family. Marie Carmelle graduated with her degree as a Medical Doctor from the prestigious State University of Haiti School of Medicine and Pharmacy in August of 1981. She is remembered by her colleagues as “very reserved, lovely, classy, proud, and with an obvious intelligence evident immediately upon meeting her and even with her obvious gifts, she walked with a humble grace.” A personal note from Paul Darbouze, son of Marie Carmelle’s late sister Marie Junie Darbouze (Duthil): Marie Carmell is the first memory I have of a mother and she raised me from infancy. Shortly after I was born, my mother left Haiti for a nursing position in Switzerland, to provide for our family, and my father pursued Medicine in the United States. I was entrusted in the care of Marie Carmelle, whom my brother Mahason and I call, Tatie Carmelle. My earliest memories are of playing games with her as she pushed me on an old tricycle around the house. As a toddler, I insisted on sharing a room with Tatie Carmelle because she was the only one who could calm me during thunderstorms, and she kept me safe when I was afraid of the dark. When I was sick, she prescribed my medicine, and made sure I was comforted in the long dark nights. Tatie Carmelle stayed up with me until I fell asleep, and woke up regularly in the middle of the night, exhausted, to check on me. When Tatie Carmelle permanently moved to the US in 1998, she took great interest in Mahason’s and my education and was profoundly encouraging of our success. She had passed on to us her tenacity, her love for our family, and her belief in the power of an education. I feel comfortable in speaking for my brother when I say, we can trace our drive and love for education also to her, in addition to our parents as we both hold Graduate Degrees. Tatie Carmelle’s love for her family was evident by her desire to stay in communication with us despite the distance separating us. She made a point to speak with us at least once a week, and if we did not immediately connect, she persisted in calling us until she did. It was because of this that Mahason and I always had an idea of what was happening in each other’s lives, even if we had not yet spoken that week. Marie Carmelle, will be remembered by her loved ones as a loving mother, doting auntie, cherished sister, supportive friend and brilliant colleague. Her lessons of tenacity, grit, drive, the value of an education, the deep love of family, of faith, compassion and generosity is the legacy we will carry for future generations.
