Joseph D. O’Connell, 91 a long time resident of River Edge NJ, entered into eternal rest surrounded by his loving daughters at home on Friday, January 7th, 2022. Beloved husband of the deceased Margaret O’Connell (Henry). Beloved father of deceased daughter Beatrice O’Connell. Loving father of his surviving daughters, Marianne Neville (Gregg), Jeanne Horn (Brian), Eileen Fox (Mark) and Katie Madonia (Dan). Beloved grandfather (Poppy) to Laura Leigh & James Neville, Jack & Maggie Horn, Katherine, Elizabeth & Michael Fox and Daniel & Olivia Madonia. He was predeceased by his loving granddaughter Julia Neville. He is survived by his beloved sister Mary Ellen O’Connell and loving sister in laws Eileen Davis and Anne Marie Henry. Beloved Uncle of many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved sister Catherine O’Connell and many loving brothers and sisters in laws. Joseph was born to Joseph Daniel O’Connell and Beatrice Shea O’Connell on December 23, 1930 and raised in the Yorkville section of New York City. He attended St. Catherine of Sienna grammar school and St. Anne’s High School (now Archbishop Molloy). His education was interrupted for service in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning from Japan he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY and went on to receive his Certified Public Accounting license. He began his public accounting career at Arthur Young & Co in 1955 and eventually transitioned to corporate Controller positions with Crane Company and Intech Leasing Corporation. After meeting at a church dance, Joseph married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Henry in September, 1956. They lived in Elmhurst Queens and began their family. Joseph traveled extensively for work and whenever he visited a new city, he liked to tour the city by boat and learn about the locale always returning bearing gifts, usually dolls for his four daughters. Joseph and Margaret (Peggy) moved their growing family to River Edge, New Jersey in February, 1967 and set about raising a family and building a community. Joseph was a devoted parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Church serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister for many decades. He spent many a summer day enjoying his children's company at the River Edge Swim Club, attending dance recitals and softball games. Joe was an avid sports fan and loyal follower of the New York Rangers, New York Giants and New York Yankees. He was friendly and engaging, well read and loved to discuss sports, history, religion, and current events. Joe was the most loyal and supportive friend and he treasured lifelong relationships with a close circle of friends from childhood. Joe was a loving and supportive grandfather, always encouraging his grandchildren in their many activities. He always instilled in his daughters that with hard work they could accomplish great things. Joseph’s kindness and love touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all. Family and friends are invited to visit Wednesday 4-8PM at the Volk Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkamack Rd., Oradell NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM at St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla N.Y.
