Eva Kyriatzis

Eva went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 30th. She leaves behind a legacy of family, friends, and a lifetime of beautiful memories. Eva was a rare gem who loved unconditionally and without judgement. Her generosity was immeasurable and her kindness insurmountable. She laughed easily and loved to joke around.....even in her last days. She loved nothing more than spending time with her "big fat Greek family" and playing with her great-children, Grayson, Asher and Chase. Eva did not have an easy life. She was born in a little mountain village in Cyprus and was one of 7 children. Their home was built of stone and there was only one large common room. Each member of the family had their own chores to do on the farm and in the fields, and when Eva became a teenager she realized that she wanted more out of her life. Instead of milking goats and picking vegetables in the fields, she dreamed of going to America and getting an education. At the young age of 14, Eva left all she knew.....her parents, her siblings, her home....all to pursue the "American Dream". She didn't know a word of English and had no idea what to expect, but she bravely pursued her dreams. It must have been so difficult for her to be a young girl living with her uncle and her older brother, but God carried her through it all. She enrolled in the local high school, made a few friends, learned English on her own, and started her journey. She excelled in Math and upon graduating, she secured a job with the NY Stock Exchange where she could wear her fashionable outfits while earning a decent living. In her early 20's, she met her husband of 62 years, Dimitri (James) and they married soon after. Once their two daughters, Dina and Melina, were born, the decision was made to move from NYC to Dumont to raise their girls. Eva balanced it all.......she was a stay-at-home mom and homemaker until the Dina and Melina went to grade school and then she began her career with NVE Bank serving as branch manager for over 30 years. She was a highly respected member of the community and an active member of St. John's Greek Orthodox Cathedral since its inception in 1969. Throughout her life, Eva continued to bless her family and friends with her infamous Greek cooking and baking. She never showed up empty handed and taught us all the art of entertaining and being hospitable to all those who entered our homes. Eva is survived by her two devoted daughters, Dina (husband Chris LaBarbiera) and Melina, her 3 adoring grandchildren, Melissa (husband John Steele), Christina (husband Ryan Forrest) and Daniel, and her 3 precious great-grandchildren Grayson, Asher, and Chase. She will truly be missed by her caring sister, Androula, and a multitude of nieces and nephews who admired and adored her. Eva was a very special lady and a small piece of her will live within each and every person who had the privilege of knowing her. We have peace in our hearts because we know that she now rests peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St.Judes Children's Hospital or St. John's Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Tenafly in memory of Eva Kyriatzis.
