Wilbert Compton

Compton, Wilbert, of Teaneck, NJ, passed away and went on to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ. He was a sage 90. Wilbert was born in Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas on September 12, 1925 to the late Jerome and Mary L. Compton (nee Porter) as the youngest of thirteen children. In 1948, he married Mattie Mae Compton. During their blessed union, they lived across several countries and countless states, as Wilbert served twenty-two years in the United States Army, and had four beautiful children. After serving in Korea, Japan and Germany, Wilbert was honorably discharged as Master Sergeant and went on to work as a technician at Christian Science Church in Boston, Massachusetts. He was also an active member and deacon of his church, Christ Temple Church of Personal Experience of Boston, Massachusetts and enjoyed fishing along the Charles River. Wilbert leaves to passionately cherish his memory: four faithful daughters: Verenda Powe, Nedra Compton-Wilcher (Victor), Audrey McGregor (Carlton) and Linda Compton; four adoring grandchildren: Sakeena Powe, John Dunning (Nora Haron), Matthew McGregor and Michael McGregor (Andre Albertini); three great-grandchildren: Princess Mikala Powe, Terrence Powe and Nile Dunning; two beloved dogs: Brixton and Brooklyn; nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was predeceased by his ardent wife, Mattie Mae Compton, and his loving brothers and sisters, Rosa Lee Compton Culbert, Jerome Compton, Lee Andrew Compton, Edward “Ed” Compton, Theresa Compton McCree, Loretta Compton Simmons Jenkins, Flora Compton Moore, Elizabeth Compton Wykoff, Earl Compton, Willie Mae Compton Everett Curtis, Charlie John Compton and Mary Louise Compton Randall Thomas. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, January 12th, 2016 at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ, 07666, from 4-8pm. A funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 13th, 2016 at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 260 Central Avenue, Hackensack, NJ, 07601, at 9am. The interment will take place at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Provinceline Road, Wrightstown, NJ, 08562. Special Thanks to Ebenezer Butler and Rhonda Mangan for their boundless compassion. Anyone who ever met Wilbert was able to experience his endearing disposition and sharp sense of humor. Although we will miss this and so much more about him, we are eternally grateful for these and so many more memories that we are able to treasure for posterity.
